How to pronounce the letter Y in European Spanish? (with IPA and examples for practice)


We are going to learn the pronunciation for the letter Y in European Spanish and we are going to use a little bit of IPA.

The letter Y has 2 very different pronunciations:

* The sound /i/, which is exactly the same as the spanish I and it is used when it is by itself or at the end of a syllable or word.
Some examples are: y, soy, hay, estoy, muy

* The sound /ʝ/ and it is used at the beginning of a syllable or in the middle, like in yo, ya, haya, yacimiento.

Warning: Please pay attention to this pronunciations as it changes in different regions and it is the same sound as the double ‘ll’.
